Happy April, RVCC!!
Why do we have awareness months? Sometimes particular topics, cultures, and/or people are not emphasized in mainstream society. An awareness month is an effort to counter this by focusing attention on the group. Sometimes we need to pay extra attention to counteract a lack of awareness.
APRIL HAS MULTIPLE ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS-This month, we would like to add a content warning for sexual assault and child abuse:
Arab American Heritage Month: This month, we celebrate the contributions of Arab Americans from across the diaspora. Thank you for everything you have brought to our culture and society!
Autism Awareness and Acceptance Month: April encourages us to expand our awareness of the Autism spectrum and to accept Autistic people of all support needs levels across the Autism spectrum. Instead of a blue puzzle piece, this year show support with the rainbow infinity symbol instead!
National Child Abuse Prevention Month: This month, be aware of the signs of child abuse. It takes community to keep our children safe from harm, especially at the hands of their caregivers. Use this link to begin finding resources.
Sexual Assault Awareness Month: According to RAINN, someone in the US is sexually assaulted nearly every minute, most with the assailant being known to the victim. In order to counteract rape culture, we must be aware of the problem, support and believe victims, and teach all the importance and meaning of consent. We have linked the RAINN hotline, but there are more resources available if anyone needs them.
