We wish all March babies a happy birthday month with Daffodil and Jonquil Flowers!!!

Why do we have awareness months? Sometimes particular topics, cultures, and/ or people are not emphasized in mainstream society. An awareness month is an effort to counter this by focusing attention on the group. Sometimes we need to pay extra attention to counteract a lack of awareness.

March has multiple acknowledgments- we have highlighted several:

Women’s History Month: Every March in the US, we celebrate Women’s History Month. Women’s accomplishments have been historically and systematically under celebrated and/or attributed to men, and, unfortunately, we still see these issues today. Women with other marginalized identities have these effects compounded. This month, Council recognizes all accomplishments, big and small, by all women.

Irish American Heritage Month: Like many immigrant groups past and present, at first, Irish immigrants experienced discrimination and prejudice in coming to the US. Now, we recognize the contribution of Irish immigrants and their Irish American descendants to our history and culture.

National Colon Cancer Awareness Month: Colorectal cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death in the US, so, this March, we include National Colon Cancer Awareness Month in the hopes that all those in high risk groups remember to get tested or talk to their medical care providers about their risks. Early detection saves lives!

Some additional highlights from this month include:

Monthly Acknowledgements are also listed in our Newsletter.

This acknowledgment project is an ongoing and constantly growing effort. It is not complete, nor will it ever be, and it takes all of us working together to help make it.

If you have a suggestion for a particular date that you would like to see included, please contact Gretcher Rivera or Caitlin Moran.
